Effect of surgery, delivery device and head position on sinus irrigant penetration in a cadaver model

Abstract Objective The extent of surgery, the type device used and head position may influence nasal irrigation. aim this study was to determine effectiveness topical irrigant delivery paranasal sinuses according these factors. Method Four cadaveric heads underwent four stepwise endoscopic dissections. Irrigations were evaluated after every stage using different devices (squeeze-bottle, gravity-dependent syringe) in two positions (nose-to-sink vertex down). Irrigant penetration into each sinus estimated a four-point scale. Results A significant positive effect surgery demonstrated for as well device. High-volume are more effective, plays role distribution frontal sinus. Conclusion This further confirms efficacy high-volume devices. down during irrigation could improve sinus, widening ostia increases access sinuses.
